This jello heart cake with flan is the perfect Valentine’s Day sweet treat to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the whole family.
Do you like flan, strawberry cake, and jello? Then, you will really enjoy this easy and refreshing jello heart cake.
I used a pink strawberry cake mix but you can use your favorite cake mix from vanilla to chocolate. However, if you use a yellow cake, there won’t be enough contrast between the cake and the flan.
For Valentine’s Day I wanted to make a pink and red cake that is shaped as a heart and easy to make.
Not everyone in my family can eat chocolate, so we decided to make this delicious and refreshing strawberry jello and flan heart shaped cake to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
The cake is easy to make but it requires a couple of steps.
First, you need to bake the cake. Then, you prepare the flan. Lastly, make the jello.
Jello Heart Cake with Flan: Ingredients
Strawberry cake mix ( you will need: 3 eggs, 1/2 cup of oil and 1 cup of water) |
Royal Flan mix (5.5oz or 156g) family size ( you will need: 3 1/2 cups of whole milk) |
Jell-o strawberry box (6oz or 170g) (you will need: 3 1/2 cups of whole milk) |
You will also need: |
heart shaped mold |
cooking spray |
Instructions
The first step is to make the strawberry cake mix by following the recipe on the back of the box.
Make sure to fill the heart shaped mold halfway so that it has enough room to rise.
Depending on the size of your heart mold, you may have some batter left over. You may use it to make some cupcakes.
Once the cake cooled down, take it out of the heart shaped mold and cut it in half. You will only need half of the cake, otherwise it’s going to be too tall.
Clean the same mold and lightly spray with cooking spray. Especially the corners where flan can easily get stuck.
Prepare the flan by following the recipe on the box but reduce the amount of milk. Instead of using 4 cups of milk, use 3 1/2. Also, whole milk makes a creamier and firmer flan that will hold its shape easily.
Fill half of the heart shaped mold with the flan. Let is set in the refrigerator.
Once the flan is set, put half of the strawberry cake on top of it and flip both out of the mold. Keep it in the refrigerator until the jell-o is ready.
Clean the heart shaped mold and lightly spray with cooking oil. Make sure the edges have some oil so that the jello will not stick and can be easily removed.
How to Prepare the Jello with Milk
Add the strawberry jello to 2 cups of milk and cook on medium heat while stirring.
Once it boils, continue stirring for 2 or 3 minutes or until the jello is completely dissolved.
Then add two cups of cold milk and stir.
If necessary strain the jello before using it.
Pour around 0.5 inches of jello into the heart mold and let it set for 10 minutes in the freezer.
Then, add the flan and cake back to the heart mold.
Use a thin knife to separate the flan and cake from the edge of the mold and pour the jello inside. Repeat this on opposites edges until you see that the cake starts floating in the jello.
Use some liquid jello to cover the top, which will later become the bottom of the cake.
Put the cake back in the refrigerator for 2 hours.
Use a hair dryer for a few seconds around the mold the loosen the jello from the mold.
